katherine’s story

At the age of 21, I went to counselling for the first time

and was incredibly lucky to meet a therapist who had the courage to challenge some of the patterns I had grown into. She was empathetic, insightful and had a quality of love that completely changed my life.

I started to understand the importance of healing and self awareness at a time in history when going to therapy still came with a stigma signalling there was something wrong with you. In the 90’s and early 2000’s choosing to be a therapist felt subversive, even counter-culture, and for me that was perfect!

I graduated from UBC in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. I also worked in a transition house for battered women, provided child, youth and family counselling at Cameray Family Counselling Agency, and taught counselling at the college level. In addition, I worked as an individual and couples therapist at Family Services of Greater Vancouver,  a mental health clinician in Addiction and Services at Fraser Health Authority and completed a practicum placement at Counselling Services at UBC. Prior to becoming a therapist, I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from UBC. And more recently I trained and work as a professional actor.

I opened Head and Heart Counselling immediately after graduating with my Master’s while simultaneously working as a mental health clinician at Vancouver Coastal Health.

Following a transformative exploration of my values, philosophy and examination of where I felt called to help, I left working in the public sphere in 2010 and have worked exclusively in private practice since. At this point I have logged roughly 25,000 clinical hours as a therapist. I have worked with an enormous array of people and issues both one-on-one and couples, and in group therapy and  critical incident trauma response in the restaurant industry.

Ten years ago, I embarked on a radical journey working with teachers in the tantric, nondual, and jnani yoga traditions. These rare individuals, Lisa Cairns, Francis Lucille, Dr. Richard Moss and Roberto Solari Roberto Solari are mystics with roots in authentic lineages going back to some of the most recognized Indian sages in history such as Nisargadatta Maharaj and Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon, as well as American esoteric philosopher Franklin Merrell-Wolff. There has been a lot of work on myself both on the spiritual path and also with remarkable therapist/healer/teachers such as Robert Augustus Masters and Dr. Richard Moss.

This journey has brought me inexpressible depths of love, gratitude and inner freedom that I endeavour to integrate with the gifts of western psychotherapy.

I am very excited about the expansion of Head and Heart Counselling into a curated community of highly trained psychotherapists who can offer their deep presence and clinical expertise to the growing number of people who are ready to embark on their own  journeys.
